Buhari: Nigeria's President proceeds on "Indefinite Medical Leave"

There would be a relative calm around the seat of power in Nigeria, as the President has finally proceeded on the needed medical leave.

Nigeria's presidential spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina announced in a statement released on Sunday, May 7, 2017, that President Muhammadu Buhari is proceeding on a follow-up medical consultation with his doctors in the United Kingdom.

“President Muhammadu Buhari proceeds to London tonight for follow-up medical consultation with his doctors.

“He had planned to leave Sunday afternoon, but decided to tarry a bit, due to the arrival of 82 Chibok girls who arrived Abuja earlier in the day,” Adesina said.

President Buhari’s previous medical trip to London in January 2017 was initially billed for 10 days but extended for further seven weeks which generated concerns and call from Nigerians on the real health status of the country's leader.

In order to avoid similar power intrudes that greeted this medical trip, President had transmitted power indefinitely to the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. This time, no time-frame was given for his absence, and this has been communicated to the nation’s Parliament leaders who earlier paid him a farewell.

"The length of the president's stay in London will be determined by the doctors. The government will continue to function normally under the able leadership of the Vice-President (Yemi Osinbajo).

"President Buhari has transmitted letters about the trip to the Senate and the House of Representatives, in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution,” Adesina said.

Earlier in the day (Sunday, May 7, 2017), President Muhammadu Buhari met the recently released 82 Chibok schoolgirls at his official residence.

Adesina further noted that the President would have left earlier on Sunday but wanted to meet the students, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram Islamists in northeast Nigeria in April 2014, causing worldwide outrage.

In recent times, the health of Nigeria’s president has been a sensitive national issue as he has been literally absent from office. Hence, the repeat of late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was been contemplated, but efforts to avoid such are being taken by important personalities and civil society organisations in Nigeria.
