Akpabio: Senator says APC will take over Akwa Ibom like Hitler (who killed millions), faces backlash

Akpabio says APC will take over Akwa Ibom like Hitler

The lawmaker has attracted public backlash for his comments on APC's plans for next year's elections.

Nigerians have reacted unfavourably towards comments made by Senator Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom North-West - APC) that the ruling All Progressives' Congress (APC) will take over Akwa Ibom like German dictator, Adolf Hitler, took over Poland, an act that kicked off World War II and led to the death of millions of people.

While speaking at a funeral mass in Enugu State over the weekend, the lawmaker, who recently dumped the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, likened the ruling party's plans for Akwa Ibom in the 2019 general elections to Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939.

He said, "Recently, I had an occasion in Akwa Ibom State and this is what happened: I went just to make a floor declaration; others do it in the social media, others just sit in their offices, some do it by text messages that they have changed platform, what we call party. But in my own, I just decided to do it in an uncommon way because they call me uncommon transformer.

"It was watched in 59 countries and somebody asked what happened there, and I said just how it happened in Poland. When did they ask Hitler's minister for information about the war in Poland, and he said Warsaw saw war and war saw Warsaw.

"I will say that in the Ikot-Ekpene arena, when I stepped out, this is my first function after that, Warsaw saw war and war saw Warsaw. We can't talk politics in the church but in 2019 Warsaw shall see war and war shall see Warsaw. The return will be victory. May God grant us all victory."

Hitler and his Nazi regime were responsible for the killing of an estimated 19.3 million civilians and prisoners of war.

Akpabio's reason for defection

The former Akwa Ibom State governor announced his defection to hundreds of supporters at a rally held in his honour in Ikot-Ekpene on August 8, 2018.

He noted that his defection was prompted by his desire to help Nigeria because the country is at war and at a time of national emergency.

He said, "Why APC? You need to know that I'm a nationalist. In troubled times like this, when a country is at war, all hands must be on deck to service the federation. This is a difficult moment for Nigeria.

"In a period of election or in a period of national emergency, everybody should put hands together to support the government to bring peace to people. I will like to be a conspirator who joins hands to conspire to bring food to the table of Nigerians."

Akpabio attracts public condemnation for Hitler comments

Akpabio's invasion comments have led to pubilc outbursts by Nigerians who have taken to social media to condemn his violent rhetoric which many interpreted as a declaration of war.

Political stakeholders in Akwa Ibom also condemned the former governor and have vowed to resist him and prevent the state from sliding into an orgy of violence during next year's elections.
