Manchester United 0 Vs 3 Tottenham: 5 things we learnt as Spurs destroy Red Devils at Old Trafford

Harry Kane and Tottenham teammates

Alderweireld shows United what they are missing, clinical Tottenham and other things we learnt from Monday night clash.

Tottenham pile more misery on Jose Mourinho and Manchester United with a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford in a Premier League clash played on Monday, August 27.

A goal from Harry Kane and a brace from Lucas Moura put handed Manchester United their second consecutive loss of the new season.

These are five things we learnt from the game

1. Woeful defence

Mourinho started with a three-man central defence of Ander Herrera, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, a defensive line-up that highlights Manchester United’s need to bolster their options.

Mourinho has been crying out all summer for backing from Manchester United to get a defender and the performances of his central defenders in the 0-3 loss to Tottenham prove his point.

The central defenders weren't just good enough and that is where they lost the game.

2. Clinical Tottenham

Despite what the scoreline might suggest, Tottenham were never on top in the game. Manchester United more chances, more possession and more attempt at goal but Spurs were very clinical in front of goal which won them the game.

Romelu Lukaku will look back in regret at the sitter he missed in the first half when the game was still goalless.

3. Luke Shaw is back

Manchester United best player of the night was without a single doubt, Shaw.

Shaw has had a hard time at Manchester United no thanks to the leg break he suffered in September 2015. After taking the long road to discovery, the 23-year-old struggled. Not helped by the harsh treatment from Mourinho, Shaw never looked his old self again until this season.

After a summer of training, working out to shield some weight, the young left-back has been one of United’s best player so far this season.

Against Tottenham, he was massive again. He didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

4. Moura finally shows his class at Tottenham

In another turn of events, Lucas Moura would have been turning out for Manchester United instead of Tottenham on Monday night.

The Brazilian was close to joining Manchester United before signing for Paris Saint-Germain as a 20-year-old in 2012. He never alighted at Paris Saint-Germain and after the arrivals of the more illustrious Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, there was no space for him at the French capital anymore.

He joined Tottenham in the Winter Transfer Window of 2018 and made just six league appearances without a goal.

He has however started this season with a bang. With his brace against Manchester United, Moura now has three goals in as many games for Spurs.

5. Toby Alderweireld shows United what they are missing

While Mourinho watched his defence fall apart in the 0-3 loss on Monday, he was what h was missing on the other side with Toby Alderweireld putting in a fine display in the heart of Tottenham’s defence.

The Belgian was solid on Monday,  he made four interceptions, won three tackles and made three clearances.

How different it could have been if he was in a red shirt at Old Trafford.
