- Phil Mickelson defeated Tiger Woods in match play to win $9 million on Friday.
- The match took longer than expected, with four playoff holes needed to determine a victor.
- Both players missed numerous opportunities to take down a decisive victory through the final holes before Mickelson finally prevailed.
It took longer than expected, but after 22 holes of match play, Phil Mickelson defeated Tiger Woods to take home $9 million in prize money.
The match between Mickelson and Woods was marked by an ending filled with missed opportunities.
Mickelson had led for most of the day, but Woods fought back to make things all square heading into the 18th hole. After the duo halved the 18th the first time around, the match went into overtime, beginning with a replay of the 18th in an attempt to determine a winner.
Woods would have the first winning opportunity. After Mickelson missed his birdie putt, Woods was left with an extremely makeable putt to take down the $9 million prize, only for it to break hard to the left just inches short of the hole.
Having split the 18th twice, Mickelson and Woods moved on to a 93-yard par 3 that would determine the match, with the two players continuing to play the hole until a victor was determined.
Mickelson would have the next chance to break through with a long birdie putt for the win, but just barely left his shot short of the hole.

On the next hole, Mickelson would once again miss his birdie opportunity and pick up his ball for par. Woods, who had hit a poor shot from the tee, was left with a putt a bit too long for comfort to extend the match.
But rather than have the winner determined on Woods' miss, Mickelson told his opponent to pick up his ball so they could play the hole again and have the match end on a made shot.
Mickelson would finally settle the matter on the next hole, sinking his putt and winning the $9 million prize.
Mickelson's win was something of an upset with the Las Vegas odds favoring Woods in the match, and after his missed opportunities through the playoff holes, it felt almost inevitable that Tiger would find a way to claw back and win.
But it just wasn't Tiger's day, and eventually, Mickelson was able to close the match out for himself.
Until next year.
